＊do A someone to do B の受け身型は、someone is done A to do B の形式になります。受け身表現の方が一般的な動詞もあります。

＊一部動詞は 補語 Ｃとして ing 型も併せて取り得ます。動詞型 �@ �Aで採り上げた動詞も混じっていますが、復習がてらここで再確認して下さい。

＊意味解釈としてはS+V+O+C としてまず把握し、＜主語 O が C である、Ｃ となる、C する＞様に、 行為者 S が動詞 Ｖ を使って ＜加工＞すると考えてみて下さい。

advise

to make a suggestion about what you think someone should  do or how they should do something:

〔advise someone to do [doing]〕 （（人）に〜するよう助言する、提言する

The region has suffered severe flooding and tourists are  therefore advised not to travel there.

　その地域は深刻な洪水を受けており、旅行者はそれゆえその場所を旅行しない様に助言されている。

ask

to invite someone to do something

to say something to someone because you want them to do  something

〔ask someone + to do〕〈人に〉〈…するように〉頼む、誘う、招待する

They asked me to feed their cat while they were away.

　彼らは出掛けている間に猫に餌やりしてくれと私に頼んだ。

The judge asked us to leave the court.

　裁判官は我々に退廷するよう求めた。

He asked me to dine with him at his club.

　彼は私をクラブでの食事に招いた。

= He invited me to dine with him at his club.

beg

to ask for something in a strong and emotional way

to make a very strong and urgent request

　強く、感情に訴えかける遣り方で要求する

beg for

beg someone to do

　が一般的な用法です。

〔beg for〕

They begged for mercy.

　彼らは慈悲を請うた。（刑を軽減、免除してくれと涙で訴える）

She tearfully begged for forgiveness.

　彼女は涙ながらに許しを請うた。

〔beg someone to do〕〈人に〉〈…するように〉懇願する

I begged him not to leave, but he wouldn't listen.

　私は彼に出て行かないでと懇願したが彼は聞く耳を持たなかった。

He begged her to stay, but she simply laughed and put her  bags in the car.

　彼は彼女に留まってくれと懇願したが、彼女はふふんと笑い、車にバッグを押し込んだ。

begと同様の意味を持つ動詞

implore someone to do 〈人に〉〈…するように〉嘆願する

＊beg より更に、情緒、真剣さの強い気持ちを表します。

I implore you to change your mind.

　お願いだから君の考えを変えてくれないか？

When he gives his number to friends, he implores them not  to pass it on.

　彼が電話番号を友人に渡すときは、絶対に他人に回すなと彼は求める。

plead with someone to do 〈人に〉〈…するように〉何度も嘆願する

The actor pleaded with the director to let him play the part.

　その俳優は監督にその役を自分にやらせてくれるようにと必死に嘆願した.

She pleaded with him to change his mind, but he refused to  listen.

　彼女は彼に考えを変えてくれと何度も嘆願したが彼は聞くのを拒否した。

He pleaded with the guards to be allowed to see his  daughter.

= He repeatedly asked the guards to be allowed to see  his daughter.

　彼は門番達が自分の娘に面会を許可される様に門番達に何度も懇願した。

→＜門番が誰かから彼の娘に面会することを許される＞様になる様に門番に求めた。

＊文法通りに解釈すると意味が通りません。門番が娘に会うことに意味は無く、父親が（建物の中に居る）自分の娘に会うことに意味があるからです。

そこで、to be allowed to see his daughter　以下を書き換えて、

→ He pleaded with the guards to allow him to see his  daughter.

　或いは、

→ He pleaded with the guards for him to be allowed to see  his daughter.

彼は自分の娘に面会させてくれと門番らに必死に願った。

　とすると意味が通ります。with someone が意味上の主語なのか、間接目的語になるのか、動詞 plead には表現の揺れが存在する様に思いますが如何でしょうか？この様に文法的には奇妙であるが意味が通ってしまう表現 （この用例はケンブリッジ辞典に収載のもの）が英語には散見されますが、能動であるべきところを受動（受け身）にしてしまう表現には、虚辞を文中に添える心情に近いものが有るように塾長は感じます。

apeal to someone to do （一般大衆に向けて）強く情緒的に訴える

I appeal to the public to remain calm.

　私は大衆に冷静でいる様に訴えた。

＊Entreat is a more formal word than those above for begging,  and adjure is even more formal.

entreat someone to do

　上記動詞より formal です。

We would spend every meal time entreating the  child  to  eat  her vegetables.

　我々は毎度の食事時間をその子に野菜を食べてくれと懇願して費やしたものだった。

The banners entreated the government to release the  prisoners.

　（デモ隊の）旗は政府に囚人を釈放するよう訴えていた。

adjure someone to do

　厳命する、懇願する

　更により formal です。

The gospel adjures us to love one another.

　福音（＝キリスト教の教義）は、我々に互いに愛し合うようにと命じます。

cause

to make something happen, especially something bad

　何か（特に悪いこと）を起こす、原因となる

〔cause someone to do〕 〈人に〉〜させる

make someone do が普通の表現ですが、原因、理由とその結果を強調したい場合に利用します。

The bright light caused her to blink.

　明るい光が彼女に瞬きさせた。

→光が眩しくて彼女は目をぱちぱちさせた。

The gravitation of the moon causes the tides to ebb and  flow.

　月の引力が潮の満ち干を惹き起こす。

= The gravitation of the moon makes the tides ebb and  flow.

 〔人に〕〈面倒などを〉掛ける

The matter caused her much trouble.

　そのお蔭で彼女は多大な面倒を受けた。

＝The matter caused much trouble to [for] her.

challenge

〔challenge someone to do〕 〈人に〉競争（討論、ゲーム）に参加するよう招く、挑発する

　Tina （Christina の愛称）は私にポーカーしないかと言っている。

= Tina has asked me to compete a game of poker with her.

The other candidates challenged the president to take part  in a debate.

他の候補者らは大統領に討論に参加するよう招いている。

He challenged anyone to beat him.

　誰でも俺を打ち倒してみろと彼は挑発した。

Can I challenge you to a game of chess?

　チェスにお招きして良いですか？

→チェスを一局（一戦）如何ですか？

(EXPRESS DOUBT)

・to express or represent doubt about the truth of something

・to question if something is true or legal

　真実なのかについて疑問を呈する、〜を疑う

Children challenge their parents' authority far more  nowadays than they did in the past.

　昔と比べて今日では、子供達は親の権威について遙かに多く疑問を示している。

Advanced computers challenge long-held notions about intelligence and thought.

　　最新のコンピュータは、知性と考察についての従来長く抱かれて来た観念に疑問を呈している。

= Advanced computers questions if long-held notions about  intelligence and thought is true.

The problem challenges me to prove my theory right.

　その問題は、＜私が自分の理論が正しいことを証明してみろ＞と挑んでいる。

= The problem questions whether my theory is right or not.

→その問題は、自分の理論が正しいのかどうか疑問を抱いている。（真実性に疑いを抱いている）

cf. weather 天気, wether 去勢した羊, whether 〜かどうか

＊全て同じ発音です。

(PRESENT A DIFFICULT TEST)

・to present tasks to someone that need great mental or physical effort in order to be done  successfully

　何かに成功するために辛い努力を要する何かの仕事を与える、課題を与える、試練を与える

It’s easy enough to crank out college graduates, but a good education should really challenge  them.

　学部卒生を量産するのは容易い事だが、良い教育とは実際に彼らに試練を与えるものであるべきだ。

choose

〔choose someone + to do〕〈人を〉選んで〈…〉させる

We chose J.F.Kennedy to represent USA.

　我々はケネディを合衆国の代表に選んだ。

choose someone to be (as)

We chose J.F.Kennedy to be (as) President of the United  States of America.

我々はケネディを合衆国の代表に選んだ。

⇔ J.F.Kennedy was chozen (as, to be ) President of the  United States of America.

convince

〔convince someone + to do〕　〈人に〉説得して〜させる　（米国用法）

to make someone agree to do something by talking to them  a lot about it

We convinced her to go with us.

　彼女に説得して同伴させた。（説得しようとしたのではなく、説得した結果実際そうさせた、の意味）

= We persuaded her to go with us.

= We persuaded her into going with us.

to make someone believe that something is true

　〈人に〉確信させる，納得させる、信じ込ませる

He tried to convince me of his innocence.

　彼は自分の無罪を私に納得させようと努めた。

= He tried to convince me that he was innocent.

　彼は新車が必要だと私に信じ込ませようとした。

dare

〔dare someone to do〕　（人）に〜（危険なことを）するように挑発する

to try to make someone do something dangerous

She dared her friend to climb onto the roof.

彼女は友人に屋根に登ってみろと挑発した。

思い切って〜する

dare not 怖れて〜しそびる

I didn’t dare tell Dad that I’d scratched his car.

　車にキズを付けたと父には怖くて言いそびれた。

= I dared not tell Dad that I’d scratched his car.

He dares not go alone.

　彼はひとりで行く勇気がない。

＊dare は had better などと同じく助動詞的な性質を持った動詞ですね。

encourage

〔encourage someone to do〕 　人が〜する様に励ます、励ましの言葉を言う、奨励する

to help someone to feel confident and able to do something, or to give advice to someone to do something

to talk or behave in a way that gives someone confidence  to do something

to make something more likely to happen

My parents encouraged me to try new things.

　僕の両親は新たな事を試す様に励ましてくれた。

 （励ましたその結果として、実際に試したかどうかは不明です）

The new teaching methods encourage children to think for  themselves.

　新たな指導方法は子供達が自分自身で考える様に奨励します。

We encourage the victims to talk freely about their  experiences.

　我々は自身の経験について自由に語るようにと犠牲者を励ました。

Instead of simply punishing them, the system encourages  offenders to modify their behaviour.

　単純に罰するのではなく、そのシステムは違反者に行動を変更する様に奨励します。

His tutor encouraged him to read widely in philosophy.

　彼の指導教員は彼に哲学書を広く読む様に助言した。

We were encouraged to learn foreign languages at school.

　我々は学校で外国語学ぶ様に奨励された。

to think or believe something will happen, or someone will  arrive:

to think that someone should behave in a particular way or  do a particular thing:

〔expect someone + to do〕〈人が〉〜すべきことを期待する、〜すべきと思う

We expect these practices to cease forthwith.

You shouldn't expect others to do your work for you.

It annoys me that she just expects us to help.

forbid

〔forbit doing〕

Smoking is forbidden here.

　ここは禁煙です.

〔forbid someone + to do〕 〈人が〉〈…することを〉許さない，禁止する

= 〔forbit someone doing〕　someone は目的格または所有格になります。

＊someone が目的格の場合、文型としてはSVOO になります。表現が揺れ動いている訳ですね。

Her father forbade her to  marry the man.

= Her father forbade her marrying the man. （her は目的格 or 所有格）

　彼女の父は彼女にその男と結婚してはならないと言った。

SVOO 文型

His doctor forbade him smoking.

＝Smoking was forbidden  (to)  him by his doctor.

　医者は彼に喫煙を禁じた.

His doctor forbade him alcohol.

＝Alcohol was forbidden (to) him by his doctor.

　医者は彼にアルコール類を禁じた。

I forbade him [his] entering the house.

　特に脅し或いは選択に余地無いことに拠り、困難な、喜ばしくない、尋常では無い事を起こさせる、人にさせる

I couldn't stay at their flat - I'd feel as if I was forcing myself on them (= making them allow  me to stay).

　私は彼らのアパートに居られなかった。彼らに無理強いしてる （＝彼らに無理遣り私の滞在を許させている）みたいに感じたし。

＊aid, assist は help に代替え出来、より formal です。

＊複数名が互いに助け合い同一のことを成し遂げる時には、collaborate か cooperate　を使います

= to help each other achieve the same thing

＊人が何かにより助けられる時は benefit (= be helped) を使います。

The children have benefited greatly from the new facilities.

= The children have been helped greatly by the new facilities.

induce

to persuade someone to do something, or to cause  something  to happen:

＊persuade が理由や理解で訴えるのに対し、induce は議論や約束、報償などの影響力で相手を誘導することを強調します。

〔induce someone （not） to do〕　説いて実際〜させる、勧めて〜させる、勧誘して〜させる

What can I say that will induce you to stay at your  job?

　何を言ったら君を職に留まる様に出来るのかい？

They induced her to take the job by promising editorial  freedom.

　彼らは編集の自由を保障すると言って彼女にその仕事に就く様に勧誘した。

to make someone feel that they want to do something  and  can do it:

自信を与えて何かをしたくさせる、〜する様に鼓舞する、激励する、発奮させる、動機付ける、触発する、気持を起こさせる

to fill someone with confidence and desire to do  something

She inspired her students to do the best they could.

　彼女は学生達に最善を尽くしたいとの気持にさせた。

Many students in my class were inspired by these  readings  to  carry on further investigations, finding more data and phonetic support for thephonological claims.
