＊not ever = not  at any time  （at no time 〜の時は一度も無い） = never けして〜する時は無い

We haven’t ever had a problem with noise in  the  neighbourhood  before

I have hardly ever eaten Vietnamese  food.

＊ever は、他の形容詞や文意を強調する用法も有ります。その場合は、一体全体、一体、本当に、などと訳します。

　もし本当に君が引っ越すならだが、良い引っ越し業者を見つける事を助言したいところだね。

If you ever go to Edinburgh, make sure to visit  the  Art  Gallery.

If I had ever wanted to stay in Manchester, they would  have  made  me very  welcome, I’m sure.

　もし私が本当にマンチェスターへの滞在を望めば、彼らは私を大変歓迎してくれただろうと確信している。

＊論理的には奇妙な文章です。want は心の中で〜したいと希望することに過ぎず、それを相手に伝えなければ相手側は歓迎の気持を示す事も出来ないからです。途中の相手に伝える段階 （自分が伝えた、回りの者が伝えた） が省かれている訳です。会話中では問題無く意味が通じます。

→If I had   (told them that I)  really wanted to  stay  in  Manchester,  they  would   have  made  me  very  welcome, I’m sure.

　私が本当にマンチェスターに滞在したいと彼らに伝えていれば、彼らは私を大変歓迎してくれたに違いない。

＊山口百恵さんのヒット曲 『青い果実』 の歌詞に、＜あなたが望むならわたし何をされてもいいわ＞との扇情的な部分が含まれます。これの英訳として、if you  want to me, I can do anyting. とすると間違いになります。これは正しくは、if  you  want to me, you can do anyting. が正しい訳です。＜あなた＞が心の中に抱いたわたしに対する欲求のままに＜あなた＞は好きに行動できる、の意味です。＜あなた＞が私に抱いた欲求を私に伝えて呉れなければ＜わたし＞はそれを実行しようがありませんね。If you  want  something  to  me,  tell  me  please. I'll  do  anything  for you. ならスジが通ります。上の、If I had ever wantedto stay 　in Manchester... の文章が捻れていることがお判り戴けたかと思います。しかし、口語の世界ではこの手の文章に溢れているのが実情です。

過去の特定の時からずっと同じまま

　この文章に関してですが、このＱ&Ａサイトでは、この語順を取るのは可なり  formal  或いは幾分  archaic  だが、近代英語でもまだ時に使われるとのことです。ever  を強調表現として捉えるのは間違いであり、‘at  any  time  in  the  past’　の意味とされています。過去のいつの時（とも同様に）ですね。

従って、この文章を、嘗て聞いた中で最も賢明な話だった、と捉えるのは誤りになります。

通常の口語表現では、以下になるとの意見も寄せられています。

It was as smart as anything  he'd  ever  heard.

　彼がこれまで聞いたなにものと同じく賢明な話だった。

これまでで一番賢明な話だった。であれば、

It was the smartest thing  (that)  he  had  ever heard.

になります。

接頭語

used before a job title or relationship  to show  that  someone  had  that  job  or relationship  in the past but does not have it now:

　過去にはそうだったが現在はそうではなくなった職歴や地位を示す、前、元〜

The governor of Minnesota is an ex-wrestler.

名詞用法もありますが、形容詞としては、

・More than or beyond what is usual, normal, expected,  or  necessary

　期待以上の、必要以上の、飛びきりの、凄い

= superfluous.

・Better than ordinary; superior

　普通より良い、上位の　extra fineness.

・Subject to an additional charge

　追加料金の　a pizza with extra cheese　（別料金で）チーズ追加のピザ

　北米や豪州で定番のシュガーレスガムですが、gum  more  than  ecpected 飛びきりのガム、の意味でしょうか？

＊すぐ前の、直前の、の意味は有りません。

　面倒を見る = look after, nurse,  tend

The painting was then restored to its former  glory  (=  returned  to  its  original  good  condition).

　次に絵画は以前の栄光に回復された（＝元の良いコンディションに戻された）

It was a long time after the accident before  he  seemed  like his 　former self  (= behaved in  the  way he had before).

彼が以前の彼自身の様に（＝以前のように振る舞う様に）見えたのは、事故後に長時間経過してからった。

→事故後長時間が経過して、彼は初めて以前の自分らしく振る舞う様になった。

＊before を then に置き換えて前から理解します。
