・ be meant to is used to talk about  what  is  desirable,  expected  or  intended:

　そうするのが望ましい、期待される或いは意図されることを表現します。

・to be expected or desirable to do

　〜することが期待される、望ましい

・to be intended to:

　〜する様に意図されている、することになっている、〜の積もりだ、

・ to be planned to do

〜される計画、予定だ

This book is not meant to be read by  children.

　この本は子供向けではない.

= This book is not intended to be read  by  children.

These batteries are meant to last for a year.

　これらの電池は１年間持つ様に意図されています。

= These batteries are intended to last for a  year.

= These batteries are planned to last for a  year.

= These batteries are supposed to last for a  year.

This exercise isn't meant to be difficult.

　この体操は難しいものとは意図されていません。

= This exercise isn't intended to be difficult.

A: It looks green to me.

僕にはそれは緑色に見えるけど。

B: Oh, is it meant to be a different colour?

　えっ？（緑では無い）別の色に意図されているのでは？

= B: Oh, is it intended to be a different colour?

It was meant to be like a quiz and we were  all  in  different  teams  and  there  was meant to be a fantastic prize.

　それはクイズに見える様に意図され、我々は全員異なるチームに居て素敵な賞が意図されていた。

＊受け身表現ですが、人称主語を取る場合は、場合に拠り受動体ではない日本語に適宜訳さないと意味が取れません。

＊〜する積もり、予定である、するのが期待される、望まれる

Try to find what you are meant to do.

　自分が何をする積もりなのか見つけようとしなさい。

= Try to find what you are intended to do.

= Try to find what you are expected to do.

= Try to find what you are desired to do.

We were meant to have gone away this week,  but  Debbie's  ill  so  we couldn't go.

　私たちは今週立ち去る積もり（予定）でしたが、デビーが病気なので出発出来ませんでした。

= We were supposed  to have gone away this  week,  but  Debbie's  ill  so  we  couldn't go.

= We intended  (or planned) to have gone away  this  week,  but  Debbie's  ill  so we couldn't go.

You are meant to rub the medicine on the  affected  area,  not  swallow  it.

　あなたはこの薬を服用するのではなく患部に擦り込むように期待されて（望まれて）います。

= You are supposed  to rub the medicine on  the  affected  area,  not  swallow  it.

= You are expected  (or desired) to rub the  medicine  on  the  affected  area,  not  swallow it.

be supposed to is used to talk about  obligations  and  arrangements:

　義務と取り決め、手筈を示す表現です。〜することなっている、〜の筈だ

　〜せねばならない。〜すべき義務や責任がある、〜する筈となっている

The children are supposed to be at  school  by  8.45  a.m.

　子供達は午前８時４５分には学校に居なければなりません。

　ベッドから出て何をしてるの？　君は眠っている時間だけど。

Where were you? You were supposed to  be  at  the  party!

　お前はどこに居たんだ？　パーティ会場に居るべきだったが。

You’re supposed to have an hour  for  lunch.  That’s  the  law.

How am I supposed to (= how can I) find  that  much  money  by  the  end  of the week?

≒ I'm not responsible  for finding  (= I can't  find)  that  much  money  by  the  end  of the week.

 今週末までにそんな多額のお金を見つける責任は私にはありません（見つける事は出来ません）。

The whole conference was totally  disorganized -  nobody  knew  what  they  were  supposed to be doing.

　会議は丸ごと段取りがついておらず、誰も彼らが何をしているべきか知っていなかった。

＊nobody は単数扱いですので、nobody ≠  they ですが、 they  はおそらく会議の運営側の者を指すのでしょう。

The appointments are supposed to be  made  without  fear  or  favour.

　それらの約束は恐れや好意とは無関係に為されねばならない。

You're supposed to put the handbrake  on  whenever  you  stop  on  a  hill.

　丘の上で停車する時はいつでもハンドブレーキをオンにしておかねばなりません。

The cost of living in the city is more  expensive,  but  salaries  are  supposed  to  be  correspondingly higher.

　都市での生活費はより掛かりますが、給料はそれに呼応してより高く（意図）されています。

= The cost of living in the city is  more  expensive,  but  salaries  are  intended  to be correspondingly higher.

This new video-recorder is supposed  to  be  foolproof.

　この新録画機はサルでも扱える様に意図されています。

The new broom was supposed to improve  the  way  the  department  is  managed,  but things have been worse than ever since she arrived.

　その新任者はその部局の管理の遣り方を改善する様に意図されていたが、彼女が赴任して以来事態は以前よりも悪化している。

I was supposed to be working this  evening  but  what  the  hell - I'll  see  you  in the pub in half an hour.

�B It’s also used to talk about  people’s  expectations  or  beliefs  about  something:

　何かについての人々の（一般的な）期待や信心について述べる、〜することが期待される、〜するとされている、〜だとされている、〜の筈だ

= to be expected to do,  to be  believed  to  do

[talking about some medicine]

　何かの薬についての話

A: Take some of this.

　これを幾らか飲みなさい。

B: What’s it supposed to do?  (What  does  it  do  to  you?)

　何に効くの？（どういう効能があるの？）

Cats are supposed to have nine  lives.

　ネコは九生を生きるとされています（そう信じられています）。

= Cats are believed  to have nine lives.

And then I’m gonna get a train over to  Brussels  which  takes  all  day  as  well. It’s supposed to be a nice route with forests and mountains  and  things. (gonna represents ‘going to’, as  it  is  pronounced  in  informal  speaking.)

　それからオレは遙かブリュッセル行きの列車に乗るんだが、同じく丸１日掛かるさ。森とか山とか景色とかの良いルートだとされている（の筈だ）けど。

It’s supposed to be a nice route  with  forests  and  mountains  and  thing.

= It's expected to be a nice route  with  forests  and  mountains  and  things.

〜する手筈である　 to  be  held, arranged　（過去表現として使えば、〜する運命だった、の意味）

〜する必要がある  need  to  do

〜すべきである、せねばならない  have  to  do,  be  obliged  to  do

〜する役務・役目がある   have a duty to do

＊これもこれまでに紹介した各種表現と同様、本来的に未来表現です。

＊（未来には、将来的には）〜する事になっている、〜する手筈である、の意味が転じ、〜の役目がある、〜の責務がある、との意味も加わっています。

＊目的表現と理解するのは誤りです。
