cut sth short

idiom

＊sth = something です。

to end (something) earlier than expected　希望より早く終わらせる、予定より早く終わらせる

to have to stop doing something before  it  is  finished:

　それが終わり切る前に何かを止めねばならない、切り上げる、打ち切る

Their conversation was cut short by the  arrival  of  more  guests.

　彼らの会話は更に多く野来客が到着したので切り上げられた。（本当はもっと会話を続けたかった）

= The  arrival  of  more  guests cut  short  their  conversation.

　更に多くの来客の到着は彼らの会話を打ち切らせた。

We had to cut short our holiday because  Richard  was  ill.

　リチャードが体調不良だったので我々の休暇を切り上げねばならなかった。（本当はもっと休暇を続けたかった）

＊続けようとしていたものを止む方なく打ち切りにする、させられる、のシーンで利用します。自発的に今日の仕事はもう切り上げようなどの場合には call it aday,  wrap it up などの表現を用います。

cutoff

(STOP)

・ the act of stopping the supply  of  something:

　何かを供給するのを停止する事、締め切り、遮断

The US has announced a cutoff of military  aid  to  the  country.

　米国はその国への軍事支援の停止を宣言した。

・ a fixed point or level at which you  stop  including  people  or  things:

　人々や事物を受け入れるのを停止する時点、締め切り日

31 March is the cutoff date for  applications  to  be  accepted.

　３月３１日は応募が受け付けられる締め切り日です。

＊ここの to be accepted は date を形容する不定詞用法です。文末の　on 或いは　by が省略されていると考えるべきでしょう。

　文法的には誤用と思われますが、Cambridge  dictionary  の用例に掲載されており、会話では通常の用法です。意味は十分に正しく通じます。

→　Application is accepted by or  on   (the  cutoff  date  of)  March  31.

＊by = not lator that 〜までに

＊関係代名詞を使用して後に主語＋述語の文内容を続けるところを、 for  +  意味上の主語  +  to 不定詞で簡略に述べることが出来ます。

be game over

idiom　informal

used to say that something will come  to  an  end,  and  in  a  way  that  is  unsatisfactory  or unsuccessful:

　何かが今後不満足な或いはふ首尾な遣り方で終わるだろう、ゲームオーバーだ

It will be game over for human  civilizations  if  we  let  global  temperatures  get  out  of  control.

　もし我々が地球の温度を制御から外れたままにしておくなら、人間の文明にはゲームオーバーとなるでしょう。

＊ここの it は漠然とした状況を示す it と考えるしかありません。

be caused  by  something:

"I feel awful." "That comes from  eating  too  much."

　とても気分が悪いよ。それは食べ過ぎが原因だよ。

= extremely  bad  or  unpleasant: とても悪い、不快だ

＊very great　の意味もあります。

I don't know an awful lot (= very much)  about  art,  but  I'm  learning.

　芸術についちゃあよく知らないけど今勉強してる（勉強しようと思って居る）ところさ。

Fortunately it won't make an awful lot  of  difference  if  I  don't  pass the test.

　運の良いことに、もしテストを通らなくても大した違いにはならないだろう。

to avoid doing something that you do not  want  to  do,  especially  by  giving an excuse:

　特に言い訳をする事により自分が遣りたくないことを避ける

I think her backache was just a way  of  getting  out  of  the  housework.

　彼女の背中の痛みは僕が思うに家事を避ける為の只の手立てだよ。

[ + -ing verb ] If I can get out of going to  the  meeting  tonight,  I  will.

　もし今日の会合が避けられるならそうするさ。

I like to get my homework out of the way  on  a  Friday  night  so  that  I can  enjoy  the  weekend.

→金曜の夜に宿題を終えたいよ。それなら週末を楽しめるし。

＊so  that 以下は＜理由＋結果＞を表します。

phrasal verb

to do or finish an unpleasant but  necessary  piece  of  work  or  duty  so that you do not have to worry about it in the future:

　将来にそれについて悩む必要の無い様に、不愉快だが必要な仕事や義務の１つを行う、終える

I'll be glad to get these exams over with.

　これらの試験をやり終えて嬉しくなるだろう。

＊to get 以下は理由を表す不定詞です。

英国、古くさい用法

to stop doing something, usually  something  annoying:

　通常何か悩まされる事を止める

Oh (do) give over (= stop complaining), it's  not  my  fault!

　黙ってくれないか、それは僕の落ち度じゃあない。

[ + -ing verb ] It's time you gave over  pretending  you're  still  a  teenager.

　君が未だ１０代の振りをするのはもう止めにしないか。

hang sth up

phrasal verb

to stop using and needing something  because  you  have  given  up  the  sport  or  activity it is used for:

　スポーツや活動を止めたのでそれに使う物を使うのを止める、必要とするのを止める

So when did you hang up your boxing  gloves  /golf  clubs /ballet  shoes?

　それで君はいつボクシンググローブ／ゴルフクラブ／バレーシューズを使うのを止めたのかい？

＊何か物を掛けて吊す、が源義です。電話の受話器を電話機本体横の金具に引っ掛けて吊すことは電話を切ることになりますね。

be over the hump

to be past the most difficult or dangerous  part  of  an  activity  or  period  of  time:

　最も困難或いは危険な活動の一部や時期を通り過ぎる、峠を越える

It's been hard work but I think we're over  the  hump  now.

　ハードワークが続いているが今は峠を越えたと思うよ。

knock off  (sth)

phrasal verb informal

to stop working, usually at the end of the day:

　通常は日の終わりに仕事を止める

I don't knock off until six.

　オレは６時まで仕事を止めないよ。

What time do you knock off work?

　何時に仕事を止める？

I usually try to knock off early on a Friday.

　僕は普通金曜日は仕事は早じまいするよ。

We didn't knock off work until 7:30.

　我々は７時半まで仕事は止めないで続けた。

＊字義通りに、叩き落とす、の意味がありますし、そこから転じて、黙りやがれ、いい加減にしろ、の意味もあります。
