量に関する副詞　barely,  merely,  norrowly, l ittle

＊質或いは量が殆ど足りない、ごく少ない、〜だけしかない、ほんの〜だけだ、ギリギリ足りているだけだ、の意味を表す副詞表現を扱います。

barely

by the smallest amount; only just　最小の量で、たった〜だけ、辛うじて〜だ、ギリギリ〜だ

They have barely enough (= no more than  what  is  needed)  to  pay  the  rent this month.

　彼らは今月は家賃を支払うのにギリギリしか持って居ない。

She was barely (= only just) 15 when she  won  her  first  championship.

　最初にチャンピオンになった時、彼女はたったの１５歳だった。

＊except for whatever his father taught him　は繋がる動詞がありませんので、He lost everyting except for whatever his father taught him　父からの教え以外は全て失った、などと考えるしかありません。

They then proceed with a particular  dwelling  type,  the  choice  of  which, unlike planning antecedents up until the late 1950s, is barely  consistent.

As so often in premodern comedy, these  are  stage  personae  in  barely  fictionalized roles, their 'character' limited to their servant function.

　とても遠くに見えてこれらは辛うじて理解出来る程度だ

＊so + （形容詞／副詞） +　as to do

 〜する程〜だ、〜である程〜だ

＊ここの  so  は  very,  extremely,  to  such  a  degree　とても〜だ、その様な程度まで、を表す副詞です。

＊未来に於いて〜するだろう程に〜だ、の源義を含みます。

I'm so tired (that) I could sleep in this  chair!

= I'm  tired to such a gegree that I could  sleep  in  this  chair!

　私はこの椅子で寝られるぐらい疲れている。

→とても疲れているのでこの椅子で寝られそうだよ。

≒ I'm  tired enought to be able to sleep in  this  chair!

= I'm  so tired as (I am/ I am going) to sleep  in  this  chair!

＊so 〜 as  to  を　so 〜 that の構文に書き換えたり、その逆も出来ます。

I'm not so desperate as to agree to that.

　それに同意するほど絶望している訳じゃあない。

= I'm not so desperate that I (should) agree  to  that.

The word itself is so rare as to be almost obsolete.

　その単語自体がほとんど時代遅れになるほどに稀なものです。

= The word itself is so rare that it should  become  almost  obsolete.

→その単語自体がとても稀にしか使われず殆ど時代遅れと言えます。

cf. as if to do 〜するばかりに、まるで〜するかの様に

＊ 接続詞 as if の後ろの主語＋述語（S + be 動詞）が省略されています。

She smiled as if to welcome me.

= She smiled as if she was (going) to welcome  me.

＊as if to say (that) 〜と言わんばかりに

= as much as to say

cf. so as to do = in order to do 〜する為に

＊言葉の源義からは意味が離れており、単純に割り切って、＜〜する為に＞、と覚えて下さい。
