(only) time will tell

(UK also (only) time can tell)

used to say that the truth or  a  result  will  only  be  known  in  the future after events have happened:

出来事が起きたのちに初めて真実や結果が知られる、時が経てば判る、時間が教えて呉れる

Only time will tell whether we  made  the  right  decision.

　我々が正しい決定をしたのかどうかは時が経てば判るだろう。

a matter/question of time until

idiom

used when you think that something will  happen  at  some  point  in the near future:

　何かが近い未来のある時点で起きると考えて居るときに利用する表現

〜するのは時間の問題だ

＊時間を示す接続詞の before/ until  以下の文では未来のことを述べる時に未来形を用いず現在形を利用します。

If you keep on driving like that, it'll only  be  a  matter  of  time  before you have an accident.

　君がその様な運転をし続けるのなら、君が事故を起こすのは時間の問題に過ぎないだろう。

It’s only a matter of time before she gets a divorce.

彼女が離婚するのは時間の問題だ

＊前後の場所や方向を表す形容詞、副詞、前置詞は、時間の前後即ち未来や過去を表す表現にもなります。

in or into the future:

　未来に於いて、未来へ

＊未来の一般的な＜先＞を表す表現です。特定の時点から〜後を表す ahed や later との用法の違いにご注意下さい。

He couldn't bear to think of the lonely  year  ahead.

　彼はこの先の孤独な年月を考えるのが耐えられなかった。

cf.  bear to do, bear doing 〜するのを我慢する、耐える

Planning so far ahead makes no sense - so  many  things  will  have  changed by next year.

　そんなに先の事まで計画するのはナンセンスだよ。来年までに沢山の物事が変化して仕舞っているだろうから。

Normally, I plan one or two days ahead.

　普通は僕は１，２日先のことをいつも計画することにしている。（現在形で習慣を表す）

Friendless and jobless, he wondered how he  would  survive  the  year ahead.

友人も職も無く、この先の年をどうやって生き延びればよいのかと彼は自問した（知りたいと思った）。

cf. wonder = to ask yourself questions  or  express  a  wish  to  know about something

earlier than or before someone or  something:

　誰か或いは何かの前に起きる、先に進んで

＊上記の未来とは逆の意味になりますのでご注意下さい。

It was already 10 AM in Moscow when  the  news  broke  in  London  that  morning, because Moscow is three hours ahead.

　そのニュースがその朝ロンドンで勃発したときにはモスクワは既に午前１０時だった。と言うのはモスクワは３時間進んでいるからだ。

ahead of

in or into the future:

　〜の未来に於いて、未来へ

She has a difficult time ahead of her.

　彼女はこの先に向けての困難な時にある。

= She has a difficult time into the future.

　彼女はこの先も困難が続く。.

I've got a busy week ahead of me.

　僕はこの先多忙な週になる。

The hardest part of the competition still  lies  ahead  of  us.

　競技の最も困難な部分はまだ我々の先に横たわっている。

be (keep, stay) one step ahead of

　一歩先んじている （時代より進んで居る）

be (keep, stay) one step behind

　後手に回る、一歩下がっている　（時代より一歩遅れている）

I walked three steps behind my teacher.

　先生の後ろを３歩離れて歩いた。

ahead of time

主にUS 用法

　前もって、予想より早く

Try to arrive at the airport ahead of time to  minimize  the  possibility  of delays.

　遅延の可能性を最小にするべく空港には前もって到着する様にして下さい。

The repairs to the road were finished two weeks  ahead  of  time (= sooner than was expected).

　道路修繕は予想より早く終わった。

The project should be completed by next March,  six  months  hence.

　その事業計画は来年の３月、即ち今から半年後までに完遂すべきです。

idiom

used to tell someone to be patient  because  the  thing  they  are  eager  for will  happen when the time is right:

　熱望することが好機が来れば起きるがゆえに今は我慢しろと言う、時が来れば、やがては、いずれその内に

Be patient, you'll hear the result all in good time.

　堪えろよ、いずれその内に良い結果を聞くから。

soon or in the near future:

　間も無く、近い未来に

ASAP

abbreviation for as soon as possible:

as soon as possible の短縮形

Please reply ASAP.

away

adverb (IN THE FUTURE)

in the future:

　未来に

= ahead

My English exam's only a week away and I  haven't  even  started  to  prepare.

　私の英語の試験は僅か一週間先だけど準備を始めてすらいないよ。（and は驚きの気持を表す逆接）

We're having a holiday in August, but that  seems  a  long  way  away.

　僕らは８月に休暇を取る計画だけどずっと先のことに見えるよ。

Christmas is only two months away.

　クリスマスは僅か２ヶ月先のことです。

The announcement of the winner is just a few  minutes  away  now.

　その勝利者の報せは今からほんの数分先だよ。

Don't worry about your driving test yet - it's  weeks  away.

　運転試験についてまだ心配するなよ。一週間先のことさ。

With the concert only a few days away,  the  band  are  practising  hard.

　僅か数日先の演奏会の為にその楽団は精力的に練習しているところです。

cf.with = because of, as a result of 〜ゆえに、〜の結果として

spoken English:

With all this work, I’d better stay in tonight.

　この全ての仕事ゆえに僕は今晩は家に居ないとマズいよ。

cf. had better do 〜しないとマズい

I couldn’t sleep with the noise of the traffic.

　交通の騒音で私は眠れなかった。

〜からもう一歩のところだ、あと一歩で〜になる、一歩間違えば〜となる

原義：〜からたった一歩離れているだけだ

＊厳密には未来表現ではありません。

We were just one step away from winning..

　僕らはあと一歩で勝てたのに。

= We were away from winning by just one step.

　僕らはたった一歩の差で勝利から離れていた。

Much of the world is (just) one harvest away  from  starvation.

　世界の殆どは飢饉からたった一収穫離れているだけだ。

→世界の殆どは一度不作となればすぐにも飢饉に陥ってしまう。

= Much of the world is away from starvation by  (just)  one  harvest.

＊away の前の　one step, one harvest は形容詞  away を修飾する副詞相当句と考えれば良いでしょう。

＊数詞　 one  が出て来たら適宜前に  just  を補うと理解が容易になる時があります。

before (very/too) long

idiom

soon:　まもなく

They'll be home before very long.

　かれらはほどなく帰宅するだろう。

cf. long before your time

君の生まれるずっと前に

＊未来表現では無く過去表現になりますね。

before you know it

idiom

very soon:　とても速やかに、いつの間にか

We'll be on our way out again before you know it.

　僕らはすぐにもまた出発する。

cf.  be  on  one's  way 　出発する

=  be  leaving

Give me a kiss and I'll be on my way.

　キスして呉れれば僕は出発するよ。

= Give me a kiss and then I'll be on my way.

＊命令文 ＋ and I'll で、〜してくれ、そうすれば（次に）〜する、との定型的表現です。
