＊ unlike  は  like  に否定辞である  un  が先頭に添えられただけの語ですが、前置詞と形容詞としての用法があります。

＊like が口語では後ろに文を取る事が出来ますが（様態の接続詞としての用法）、unlike  にその用法はありません。ご注意下さい。

前置詞としての unlike

２つの意味用法がありますが、これは前置詞  like に似ています。

1.  different  from　〜とは違っている、似ていない

Dan's actually very nice, unlike his father.

ダンは父親と違って、実はとてもいい人なんだ。

Unlike you, I'm not a great dancer.

　あなたと違って、ダンスは得意じゃない。

She was a small, dainty child, unlike her  sister  who  was  large and had big feet.

Unlike his father, he lacks  intelligence

2. 物理学用語

　磁石の異極の

The unlike poles (= ends) of a magnet  (= an  object  that both  attracts  and pushes away iron and steel objects) are the opposite ends, which  attract each other:

　磁石（＝鉄や鋼鉄の物体を引き寄せたり押しのけたりする物体）の異極（＝両端）とは、互いに引き合う反対側の端のことである。

Like poles repel; unlike poles attract.

　同極は反発し、異極は引き合う。

"Unlike poles" means opposite poles - one  north  and  the  other south.

　非同極とは、反対の極を意味し、北極と南極のことである。

If the poles are unlike there will be force of  attraction;  in  the  case of like poles, there will be force of repulsion.

　極が反対であれば引力となり、極が同じであれば斥力となる。
