identify

＊様態の表現の番外編ですが、前回 identical が出たついで？に日本人には分かり難い動詞 identify とその派生語について解説しましょう。

＊そもそも＜同一視する＞などの辞書の訳語が日本語になって居らず、初学者には意味不明で大きな混乱を招いていますね。

＊これは日本の英語指導者側の怠慢そのものではないでしょうか？

＊或いは英和辞典編纂者が＜多忙故に＞練度の足りない和訳語を掲載したのが間違いの始まりだった？のかも知れません・・・。

＊英英辞典に＜相談する consult a dictionary＞のが英語学習の肝心要と言う次第で、英和に頼り切りだとその先に踏み込めません。

1. (RECOGNIZE)　他動詞　〜が〜であると認識する

to  recognize  someone  or  something  and  say  or  prove  who  or what  that  person  or  thing  is:

　誰かまたは何かを認識し、その誰かまたは何かが誰かまたは何であるかを言う、または証明する：

to  find  and  be  able  to  describe  someone  or  something:

　誰かや何かを見つけ、それを説明できるようにする

＊要するに、対象としている者、事物が、誰、何であるのか、その座標軸、名前を特定し、或いは名付け、他の者、事物とは違うと＜特定する＞ことが identify です。

＊従って、〜であると名付ける、〜であると見つける、などと適宜和訳するとしっくり来る場合も多々あります。

〜であると識別する

＊要するに、自分の知識のリストに照らし合わせて対象の事物、者の名前を具体的に挙げることが出来る、ということですね。

　A robin is easy to identify because of its red breast.

ホウロクシギは胸が赤いので見分けがつきやすい。

cf. This book is easy to read. と同じく  ＜tough  タフ構文＞です。

After she had identified the body of her husband, the police asked her to collect his personal effects.

　彼女が夫の遺体を確認した後、警察は夫の所持品を回収するよう求めた。

cf. the police は複数扱いになります。

Aircraft are required by law to carry special electronic devices, called transponders, so that they can be identified.

　航空機は識別できるように、トランスポンダーと呼ばれる特別な電子装置を搭載することが法律で義務づけられている。

The press has identified several people they think are likely to be appointed to government posts in the autumn.

　マスコミは、秋に政府のポストに任命されそうな人物を何人か特定した。（具体的な名を挙げた）

How many different trees can you identify?

　あなたは何種類の木を識別できますか？（＝個々の木の名前が言えるか）

Small babies an identify their mothers.

　小さな赤ちゃんは母親を識別できる。（名前は言わずとも、自分の母親だと特定出来る）

Even the smallest baby can identify its mother by her voice.

　どんなに小さな赤ちゃんでも、声で母親を識別できる。

問題等を特定する、原因物質等を同定する、突き止める

to recognize a problem, need, fact, etc. and to show that it exists

[問題、必要性、事実などを認識し、それが存在することを示す

＊意味は上の文例などと同じですが、主語が無生物の受動態となる場合が殆どです。

＊既知の物質等に或る調査対象の物質が一致するかどうか確認する操作を、特に日本語ではその装置を同定する、と表記する習慣があります。

＊同定するは、既存のリストに載っている方法などについても利用されます。

能動態の文例

You need to identify your priorities.

　あなたは優先順位を特定する必要があります。

We have also identified the underlying reaction mechanism.

　基礎となる反応メカニズムも同定された。

Programming language design (including extension) would then become basically a task of identifying what we call these 'platonic combinators' forthe different data types.

　プログラミング言語の設計（拡張を含む）は、基本的に、異なるデータ型に対して我々が「プラトニック・コンビネーター」と呼ぶものを特定する作業になる。

＊文書が人を特定せねばならない、とは実は論理的に成立しない奇妙な文ですね。

→以下に書き換えるとスッキリするでしょう。

受動態の文例

The research will be used to identify training needs.

　この調査は、トレーニングのニーズを特定するために使用されます。

No common primary or secondary food supplier was identified.

　共通する第一、第二の食物供給源は特定されなかった。

Effective methods for decontaminating whole and cut melons have not been identified.

ホールおよびカットメロンを汚染除去する効果的な方法は特定されていない。

All of these identified issues resulted in referrals to a variety of medical and non-medical support staff.

　これらの特定された問題はすべて、さまざまな医療スタッフおよび非医療サポートスタッフへの紹介につながった。

In the event of adverse impact being identified, then an alternative must be considered to offset or mitigate the identified adverse impact.

　有害な影響が特定された場合、特定された有害な影響を相殺または緩和するための代替案を検討しなければならない。

　患者と家族のトータルケアへの発展と全人的アプローチを妨げている問題が特定され、今後対処される予定である。

Note that we are using a specification without intercept such that two threshold parameters can be identified.

　ここでは、2つの閾値パラメータを同定できるように、切片のない仕様を使っていることに留意されたい。

Of the strategies identified, sleep was the most effective although active strategies such as exercise, talking to friends and "doing somethingdifferent" was also effective.
