様態を表す慣用表現

＊いずれも口語的表現であり、formal な文やスピーチでは用いられません。

＊大学入試などでもほぼ出題もされませんが、一応目通ししておいて下さい。

along the same lines

　同じような、似た線の、似たようなタイプの、同じように、似た腺で　

 （形容詞句にも副詞句にもなります）

* lines と、複数形を用いることにご注意下さい。

I was thinking of doing a meal along the lines of  that  dinner  I did for Annie and Dave.

　アニーとデイブのためにした夕食のような食事をしようと思っていたんだ。

They're campaigning for the electoral system to  be  reformed  along  the lines of (= so that it becomes similar to) the one in Germany.

　彼らはドイツの選挙制度と同じように選挙制度を改革するよう運動している。

My sister works in publishing, and I’m hoping to  do  something  along the same lines.

　姉が出版社で働いているので、私も同じような仕事をしたいと思っています。

and what have you

　and other similar things:　〜と似たようなもの：

There were a couple of bags full of old records,  magazines,  and  what have you.

as is

in the state that something is in at the present time:　

 今あるものをそのままの状態で、今のままで、現状で

Used to warn buyers that something that is  being  sold  is  not  in perfect condition.

　売られているものが完全な状態ではないことを買い手に警告するときに使う表現です。

Will you wait till it's finished or take it home as is?

　完成するまで待ちますか、それともそのまま持ち帰りますか？

All merchandise is sold as is - no discounts, and  no  exchanges.

　商品はすべて現状販売です。値引き、交換はできません。

as much again

the same amount again:　また同じだけ：

My fare was £10, and it was almost as much again  for  the  children.

　私の運賃は£10だったが、子供たちにはまた同じくらいだった。

as much as the next person

= as much as anyone would:　人並みに

I enjoy winning awards as much as the next guy,  but  other  things  are more important to me.

　私は人様並みに賞を取ることを楽しんでいるが、でも他のことの方が私にとって重要だ。

as much

If you say that you thought/expected/said as  much,  it  means  that something bad that you thought/expected/said would happen has happened:

　I thought/expected/said as much と言えば、「起こると思った／予想した／言った」悪いことが案の定起こったことを意味する：

I knew he'd fail - I said as much at the time.

　彼が失敗することはわかっていた。その時にそうなると言ったよな。

the same:　同じ：

Go on, lend me the money - you know I'd do  as  much  for  you.

　さあ、金を貸してくれ。僕だったら君のために同じ事をするのを分かって居るよな？

at this rate

if the situation stays as it is:　このまま同じ状況が続くなら、このままだと

At this rate, we won't be home until midnight.

　このままでは、夜中まで帰れない。

be cut from the same cloth

(also be cut out of the same cloth)　同じ生地から作られる

to have very similar qualities to someone or something  else:

　誰かまたは何かと非常に似た性質を持つこと：

We're cut from the same cloth, you and I.

　私たちは同じ布から作られている。

His first movie was cheaply made and full of cliches  and  this  film is cut from the same cloth.

　彼の最初の映画は安っぽく、陳腐なものばかりだった。

Today's players are not cut out of the same cloth  as  those  greats.

be in the same ballpark

to be of a similar amount or cost:　同じような金額や費用であること：

Jamie makes over two hundred thousand dollars  and  I  don't  know how much Tom makes, but I guess it's in the same ballpark.

　ジェイミーが20万ドル以上稼いでいて、トムがいくら稼いでいるかは知らないが、同じぐらいだと思う。

be next door to

英国用法

to be almost the same as something:　何かとほとんど同じである：

If you're asked to resign from your job, it's next  door  to  being  fired.

　辞職を求められたら、それはクビになるのと同じことだ。

be no better than

　一番だ、何かに勝るとも劣らない、同じだ　（悪い意味でも使います）

People who don't pay for a bus ticket are no  better  than  common  criminals.

　バスの切符代を払わない人は、普通の犯罪者と変わらない。

be two sides of the same coin

If two things are two sides of the same coin, they  are  very  closely related although they seem different:

　2つの物事が同じコインの裏表である場合、それらは異なっているように見えるが、非常に密接に関連している、表裏一体だ

Violent behaviour and deep insecurity are often  two  sides  of  the same coin.

　暴力的な行動と深い不安は、しばしば同じコインの裏表である。

not make any difference

(also not make the slightest difference)

to not change a situation in any way: 少しの違いもない、状況を何ら変えない

You can ask him again if you want, but it won't  make  any  difference - he'll still say no.

　何度頼んでも同じだ-彼はノーと言うだろう。

It makes no difference where you put the  plants - they  won't  grow in this soil.

　植物をどこに置いても変わらない-この土では育たない。

of the kind

　like or similar to what has been said: 似たような、言われたことに似ている、その種の

　the same thing or person: 同じもの、同じ人、同一人

I was amazed to discover that Mary's husband  and  Jane's  son  are one and the same (person).

　メアリーの夫とジェーンの息子が同じ（人）だと知って驚いた。

or something (like that)

She works for a bank or something.

　彼女は銀行か何かに勤めている。

Why don't you go to a movie or something?

put the clock back

(also turn the clock back, rewind the clock,  wind  the  clock back) 時計を戻す

to make things the same as they were at an  earlier  time:

　物事を以前の時点と同じにする：

The court's decision on this case will put the  clock  back  50  years.

　この事件の判決によって、時計の針は50年前に戻ることになる。

I'm sure she wishes she could rewind the clock  now.

　彼女は今、時計の針を巻き戻せたらと思っているに違いない。

We can't rewind the clock back to 2016.

　時計を2016年に巻き戻すことはできない。

He said the unions want to wind the clock back  to  the  1970s.

　労働組合は1970年代に時計を巻き戻したいと望んでいるのだ、と彼は言っている。

word for word

using exactly the same words: 全く同じ言葉を使って：

She listened to everything I said and repeated it  word  for  word  to her mum.

　彼女は私の言うことをすべて聞き、それを一字一句同じように母親に繰り返した。

　一語一語

If you translate speech or writing word for word,  you  change  one  word at a time in the same order rather than in phrases or other larger unitsof meaning.

　スピーチや文章を一語一語訳す場合、フレーズや意味の大きな単位ではなく、同じ順序で一語ずつ変えていきます。

　これまで７ヶ月！に亘り展開してきた様態表現についてのコラムを今回で終えます。考えて見ると、人間の判断には他のものと比較する心理が必ず根底にあってのものであることが認識出来るかも知れません。その各種言い回しを体得すると英語表現力の大きな向上に繋がるものと思います。
