These words all refer to a way that someone  or  something  is  not the same as other people or things around them.

　ここに扱う言葉はすべて、誰かや何かが他の人や周りのものと同じではないこと、またその状態にあることを指します。

* 今回は、名詞 difference と distinction の動詞型である differ と distinguish について解説します。

differ

・to be not like something or someone else,  either  physically  or in another way:

　物理的に、または別の方法で、何かまたは誰か他の人と似ていない、異なっている

＊註： differ は、状態を表す動詞である事に留意して下さい。

The twins look alike, but they differ in  temperament.

　双子は見た目は似ているが、気質が違っている。

The findings of the various studies  differ  significantly/markedly/radically.

　様々な研究結果は著しく／顕著に／根本的に異なっている。

The incidence of the illness differs  greatly  between  men  and women.

　病気の罹患率は男女で大きく異なっている。

American English and British English  obviously  differ  in  pronunciation.

　アメリカ英語とイギリス英語は明らかに発音が違っている。

The findings further revealed that male and  female  respondents  differed in the order of the primary strategies they used.

As expected, the results of deaf children  differed  significantly  as  a function of their speech skills.

to notice or understand the difference  between  two  things, or to make one person or thing seem different from another:

　2つの物事の違いに気づいたり理解したりすること、区別する

to see, hear, or experience something, esp.  with  difficulty:

　特に困難な状態で、何かを見たり、聞いたり、経験したりすること、識別する、見分ける

＊動詞 differ が違っている、との状態を表すのに対し、動詞  distinguish は、違いを見分ける、とのaction 能動ですね。

In the dark, I could barely distinguish the  shape  of  a person.

　暗闇の中で、私はかろうじて人の形を見分けることができた。

It’s important to distinguish between  scientific  fact  and fiction.

　科学的事実と虚構を区別することは重要だ。

Teachers have to learn to distinguish  between  behaviour problems associated with learning difficulties and behaviour problems linked tosomething else.

A major way in which a semantic type of verb is  distinguished  is by  the semantic roles associated with the verbs comprising the type.
