　皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾　塾長　藤野　健です。

　前回シリーズまで、似ている、近い、の表現、即ち様態表現について扱って来ましたが、その真逆の、２つの事物が量的にまた質的に異なる或いは関係性が一定せずに変動する、などの広義での＜違い＞の表現を取り扱います。＜異なる＞の視点で物事を記述するシーンは日常的に非常に頻繁に見られることです。まぁ、事物を認識することの基本はそれが他と異なっていることを認識する事に他なりませんから、ヒト、いや全ての生き物の感覚、判断の根本がモノの違いを認識すること、＜違いが分かる＞事に成立するとも言えましょう。まぁ、逆に違いが分からない様ですと、例えば何を食べさせても＜うまい＞としか語らないと、コイツ馬鹿かとインテリの友人も離れてしまいますね。－ この様な英語表現について暫くざっと一通り見て行きましょう。口語では見かけない単語や用法も多く含まれますが、formal な場面で利用される一通りの表現を頭に入れておくと英文の読解も格段に容易になります。その解説の第２６回目です。多義性を持つ言葉も登場しますが、その場合は、異なる、遠い、などの意味用法のみについて扱って行きますのでご注意下さい。語感を把握して戴く為に用例を多目に掲載しています。

"Peculiar  People", of  Detroit, MI tout the genre "Truth Music", which is a spin-off

of  what  would be considered  Christian Rap with a flare for more literal aspects  of  the

1611  King  James Bible. Even so much as to call out scriptural addresses  giving

depth  to  the already  lyrical  onslaught which is present within all 16 members. Ranging

from  all  over the city  of　Detroit and different walks of life, the group  is  heavily

washed  in  the "Doctrine  of  Christ" (Hebrews 6: 2). with this debut anthem "8 Bars",

each  artist  gets  a  chance to flex their lyrical prowess, and display  what  is

to  come  from  this  never before seen "Super Group" of righteous  music.


ミシガン州デトロイトの "Peculiar People "は、1611年の欽定訳聖書（King James Bible）

をより文字通りに解釈したクリスチャン・ラップをスピンオフした "Truth Music "という

ジャンルを標榜している。聖句を多く連呼するまでのことが、16人のメンバー全員に

内在する歌詞の畳みかけの文言に深みを与えている。デトロイトの街中、そして

さまざまな人生の歩みから集まったこのグループは、「キリストの教義」（ヘブル6：2）

に深く洗われている。このデビュー・アンセム "8 Bars "で、各アーティストはリリックの

才能を発揮し、このこれまでにない "スーパー・グループ "の正義の音楽から

何が生まれるかを示すチャンスを得た。


まぁ、黒人霊歌の新形式とでも言えましょうか。ヒアリングの練習にどうぞ。英語は

一連の語句の固まり、詰まりはフレーズを組み合わせて瞬時に作られるものである

ことが理解出来る様になるでしょう。それが分かれば相手の言いたい事がスンナリ

聴き取れる様になります。


予期せず違っている、変わっていて良くない、の表現３



These words refer to people or things that  are  different  from what is normal in an unusual or unexpected way.

＊他と違っていて悪い、とのネガティブな評価を与える表現です。



funny, peculiar, 英国英語での curious

何かが普通とは違っていて奇妙な場合は、funny、 peculiar を、また更にイギリス英語では curiousという形容詞を使うことができます。これらの単語は、しばしば予想外のことを指しますが、不自然に思えるようなことを指す言葉ではありません。peculiar は、不快な意味での違いや予想外のことを指すことがあります。

belonging to, relating to, or found in only  particular  people or things:

　特定の人や物に属する、関連する、または特定の人や物だけに見られる：～に特有の、独特の

＊こちらはマイナスの感情が伴わない中立的な用法です。


He gets on with things in his own peculiar way/manner/fashion.

　彼は彼独特の方法・やり方・流儀で物事に取り組む。


The simple answer is that in the peculiar  circumstances  of  he 1940s shortage economy, this was the best use of the money.

　単純な答えは、1940年代の不足経済という特殊な状況下では、これが最善のお金の使い方だったからである。

弁護士のサムソン・ブラスとその妹サリーと手を組み、クイルプは祖父の資産を差し押さえる。

しかし、ネルは真夜中に店からの脱出を計画し、ネルと祖父は、宿敵の猛追を受けながら、

Such "curious" cases, symbolic of clinical medicine's  incomplete  professionalization and lingering allegiance to an older, more openly-subjective　medical culture, are in fact not uncommon.
