＜very + 平易な形容詞、副詞＞の＜他の語＞への言い換えの例

＊退屈で凡庸な、眠気を誘う＜very + 平易過ぎる形容詞＞の組み合わせではなく、適切な形容詞に置き換える様にして語彙力を高めましょう。

＊以下、全て頻用される日常語ですので言い換え表現を丸ごと覚えて下さい！

＊中学英語に登場する易しい形容詞の＜高級＞同義語への言い換えについて網羅する解説コラムを、機会あらば作成する予定です。

＊very なる程度の強意の語を冠することの出来る語は、gradable な（＝比較級、最上級の取れる）形容詞ですが、言い換えられた形容詞の多くはそれ自体に強意の意味を持ち、non-gradable な形容詞になります。この形容詞を extreme adjective 極端形容詞とも言いますが、これらについての文法的な解説は本シリーズの最後に行う予定です。

very happy → overjoyed, thrilled, ecstatic, elated

She just found out she's pregnant. She's  very  happy.

　妊娠がわかったばかりなの。彼女はとても喜んでいる。

→ She's overjoyed.

　彼女は嬉しいなんてものじゃあない。（＝幸せと喜びに満ちている）

→She's  thrilled. (= really happy and excited)

　彼女はワクワクしている。（＝本当に幸せで興奮している）

→She's ecstatic/ elated.(= full of an overwhelming  feeling  of  happiness).

　彼女は幸せの絶頂にある。（圧倒的な幸福感に満ちている）

very sad → heartbroken, devastated, disappointed,  dejected, ashamed, melancholy, crestfallen, miserable

＊sad は様々な状況で使う語なのでニュアンスに注意して置き換えます。

His girlfriend just left him. He's very sad.

　彼のガールフレンド（＝恋人）は彼の元を去ったばかりだ。彼はとても悲しんでいる。

→ He's  heartbroken/ devastated (= sadness + shock,surprize)

　彼の心は折れている／ガックリ来ている。(= 悲しみ + ショック、驚き)

Sara looked very sad. She had been so confident she  would  win  the competition, but then she came fifth.

　サラはとても悲しそうだった。彼女は大会で優勝する自信があったのに、5位になってしまった。

→ She looked disappointed/ dejected.

　彼女は落胆しているように見えた。

We were very sad to hear the fire destroyed their family  home.

　火事で彼らの実家が全焼したと聞いてとても悲しかった。

→ We were devastated to hear the fire destroyed theirfamily home.

　私たちは火事で彼らの実家が全焼したと聞いて打ちのめされた。

very good → amazing, fantastic, fabulous,  magnificent,  marvellous, excellent, wonderful, splendid, exceptional, awesome

＊ニュアンスの違いは有りますが、素晴らしい、傑出した、驚く程の、などの訳語を適宜当てればそれで正解です。

That's a good idea.

　それはいい考えだ。

→ That's a marvellous idea.

　素晴らしいアイデアだ。

→That's  an  excellent idea.

　秀逸なアイデアだ。

I thought your performance is very good.

　私はあなたの演技はとても良いと思いました。

→　I thought  your  performance is exceptional/ amazing.  

　あなたのパフォーマンスは例外的なぐらいの（格別な）／驚くぐらいの演技だった。

→It was a splendid performance.

　それは眩いばかりの演技でした。

After years spent as frontbench attack dog, he is relishinghis transition into something altogether better.

　フロントベンチの攻撃犬として過ごした数年後、彼はずっともっと素晴らしいものへの移行を楽しんでいる。

　（警察や軍事の攻撃用のイヌの話なのか、メディアの新米取材記者の話なのか、この文章だけでは特定不可能です。）

They suggested we meet them in France which, I  thought,  was  a  very good idea.

　彼らはフランスで会うことを提案しましたが、私はそれはとても良い考えだと思いました。

→ It was a marvellous/ excellent/  exceptional/ splendididea

　楽しみな素晴らしい試合がまだ3つある。

very bad → horrible, terrible, awful, dreadful,  atrocious,

It tasted very bad.

　それはとても不味かった。

→ It tasted awful/ disgusting/

　それは恐ろしいまでの／嫌になる程のひどい味だった。

The weather has been very bad lately.

　最近天気がとても悪い。

→ The weather  has  been  terrible lately. / It's beendreadful.

　最近の天気はひどい/ もの凄い。

His behavior was very bad.

　彼の態度は非常に悪かった。

→His behavior was atrocious.

　彼の態度は最悪だった。

They are getting married this afternoon but  unfortunately,  the weather  looks very bad.

　彼らは今日の午後に結婚式を挙げるが、あいにく天気がとても悪そうだ。

→ the weather looks awful/ terrible/ dreadfu/ atrocious.

　天気は恐ろしい／非道い／もの凄い／最悪の様に見えます。

very big →huge, enormous, massive, gigantic,  monstrous

We walked through a very big gate at the entrance.

　私たちは入り口のとても大きな門をくぐった。

→ We walked through an enormous gate at the entrance.

　私たちは入口の巨大な門をくぐった。

→The gate we walked through was massive.

　私たちが通り抜けたゲートは巨大な固まりだった。

Some of the ships that pull in and out of the port near  my  house are monstrous!

　私の家の近くの港に出入りする船の中には、怪物級なものもある！

Look at the queue of the people waiting to get in, it's  very  big!

　入港を待つ人々の列を見てください、とても大きいですよ！

→ it's huge/ enormous/ massive/ monstrous/ gigantic!

　それは巨大だ／莫大だ／大きな固まりだ／怪物級だ／巨人の様だ

＊源義通りに訳すと日本語に合いません。＜もの凄い＞と訳して逃げるのが最善です。

very small → tiny, miniscule, minimal

Paul was quite angry about the damage, even though  the  scrach on the car was very small.

　車の傷はとても小さかったものの、ポールはその損害にかなり腹を立てていた。

→　Paul was quite angry about the damage, even though  the  scrach on the car was tiny/ miniscule.

→ ポールは、車についた傷はごく小さな／ささいなものであったにもかかわらず、その損害についてかなり腹を立てていた。

The chances of losing our all money are very small.

　我々が全財産を失う可能性は非常に小さい。

→  The  chances of losing our all money are minimal.

　私たちの全財産を失う可能性は最小限だ。

very dirty  → filthy

Don't let that dog inside. it's very dirty.

　その犬を中に入れちゃあダメさ。とても汚いよ。

→　It's filthy.

　非道く不潔だから。

It rained the entire weekend we were away camping, so  when  we  got home on Sunday, everything was very dirty.

　キャンプに出かけた週末はずっと雨が降っていたので、日曜日に家に帰ると、何もかもがとても汚れていた。

→everything was filthy.

　何もかもが泥だらけだった。

cf. fifthy は米俗語で意味が逆転して＜えげつないほど素晴らしい＞の意味で使われることがあります。

very clean → spotless, immaculate

We ware so impressed when we got home, the house  was  very  clean!

　とても感動しました！家に帰った時、とてもきれいだったんです。

→ the house was spotless.

　家は汚れひとつなかった。

Usually your car is full of rubbish, but today, it's very  clean!

　君の車はいつもはゴミだらけなのに、今日はとてもきれいじゃないか！

→ Usually your car is full of rubbish, but today, it'simmaculate!

　いつもはゴミだらけなのに、今日はピカピカだ

Have you seen her engagement ring? It's very pretty!

　彼女の婚約指輪を見たことがありますか？とてもきれいだ！

→ It's  beautiful/ stunning/ elegant/ exquisite!

　それは美しい、息を呑むほどだ、上品だ、絶妙だ！

vert ugly → hideous, grotesque

Some of the big houses upon the hill  are very ugly.

　丘の上の大きな家のいくつかはとても醜い。

→  Some  of  the big houses upon the hill  are grotesque.

　丘の上の大きな家のいくつかはグロテスクだ。

The drive way are lined with very ugly statues.

　車道にはとても醜い彫像が並んでいる。

→ The  drive  way are lined with hideous statues.

　車道には醜悪な彫像が並んでいる。

A very ugly monster emerged from the cave.

　非常に醜い怪物が洞窟から出てきた。

→ A  hideous/  grotesque monster emerged from the cave.

　洞窟から醜悪な／グロテスクな怪物が現れた。

very angry → furious

Seeing abuse and inequality makes me vert angry.

虐待を見た途端私はとても腹が立ちました。

→Seeing abuse and inequality makes me furious,

　虐待を見た途端オレは怒り狂った。

very scary → terrifying

I think snakes are very scary..

　ヘビはとても怖いと思う。

→I think snakes are terrifying.

　ヘビはマジ恐怖だね。

very interesting → fascinating

That's a very interesting problem.

　それはとても興味深い問題です。

→That's a fascinating problem.

　それは心惹かれる問題です。

very unusual → extraordinary

This is an very unusual result.

　これはとても普通では無い結果です。

→This is an extraordinary result.

　これは尋常では無い結果です。

very hungry → starving

I haven't eaten all day. I am very hungry.

　僕は一日食べていない。とても空腹なんだ。

→I haven't eaten all day. I am starving.

　僕は一日食べていない。飢え死にしそうだよ。

very tasty → delicious

This cake is very tasty.

　このケーキはとても良い味です。

→This cake is delicious.

　このケーキは美味しいです。

very tired → exhausted

I got up at 5 am today. I am very tired..

　朝の５時起きだったからとても疲れたよ。

→I got up at 5 am today. I am exhausted.

　朝の５時起きだったからもう燃え尽きたよ。

very old → ancient

The museum exhibits very old vases and artefacts.

　この博物館はとても古い花瓶と工芸品を展示している。

→The museum exhibits ancient vases and artefacts.

　この博物館は古の時代の花瓶と工芸品を展示している。

very wet→ soaking

I got caught in the rain and now I'm very wet.

　雨に掴まってしまい今はとても濡れている。

→I got caught in the rain and now I'm soaking.

　雨に掴まっちまい今は全身ズブ濡れさ。
