・used at the beginning of a sentence to connect it with something that has been said or has happened previously:

前に起こったこと、言ったことと次の文を繋ぐために文頭に使う、そういうことで、それで、などと軽く訳す

So, there I was standing at the edge of the road with only  my underwear on ...

　それで私は下着だけ身につけて道路の端に立っていた。

・used as a way of making certain that you or someone else understand  something  correctly, often when you are repeating the important points  of a plan:

　皆が正しく理解していることを確認し、計画の重要性を繰り返す

So we leave on the Thursday and get back the next  Tuesday, is that right?

　それじゃあ木曜日に出発して次の火曜日には戻るのでいいのね？

・used to refer to a discovery that you have just made:

　発見したばかりのことに言及する

So that's what he does when I'm not around!

　なるほど、僕が居ないときに彼がそうすると言うことか。

・used as a short pause, sometimes to emphasize what you  are saying:

　短く間を置いて、言う事を時に強調する

So, here we are again - just you and me.

　いいかい、ここにはまた君と僕しか居ないんだ。

・used before you introduce a subject of conversation that is of present  interest, especially when you are asking a question:

　特に質問をする際に、現在の会話の主題を紹介する

So, who do you think is going to win the election?

・used to show that you agree with something that someone  has just said, but  you do not think that it is important:

自分は別段重要とも思わないが、相手が言ったばかりのことに賛同を示す

So the car's expensive - well, I can afford it.

　そうだよなぁ、その車は高い。ええと、でも僕には買えるけど。

My car broke down. That's  why  I'm so late.

　僕の車が壊れた。それでこんなに遅刻した訳さ。

Lucy worked out how to fix it. That's Lucy for you (= She  can fix anything).

　ルーシーはそれをどう直せばいいか何とか解決した。それがルーシーってものさ（君らにとってのルーシーさ）。

他動詞用法

・to get rid of取り除く　除去する

We might properly say that the ‘uncompleted emotion’..could be given an  opportunity to work itself out.

　＜不完全な情緒＞には、それ自体を排除する機会が与えられるのではないか、と言うのも正しいのではないか。

・to work (a mine, etc.) until it yields no more; to exhaust by‘working’. 採掘により鉱山を枯渇させる

As one part [of the rock] was worked out it was filled in with  rubble from the  new excavations.

　岩石の一部が掘り尽くされたので、新たな掘削からの瓦礫で満たしておいた。

・to bring about, effect, produce, or procure (a result) by  labour or effort 労力、　努力により成し遂げる、作られる

to carry out, accomplish (a plan or purpose). 計画や目的をやり遂げる

The natural tendency of their mode of life..worked itself out  as time went on.

彼らの生き方の有り様は時が経つに連れて自然に形作られた。

The fortunes of England were being slowly wrought out in  every incident.

　イングランドの繁栄は全ての出来事を通じて徐々に成し遂げられつつあった。

・to solve; also, to reckon out, calculate　解決する、算出する

She tried to work out the question in her own mind, whether her eagerness  for classical learning was a wrong sort of ambition.

　彼女自身の頭の中で、古典学習への自分の情熱が間違った種類の大望なのかどうかの疑問を解決しようと努力した。

A practised novel-reader could probably work out the　 problem and complete  the plot.

　手慣れた小説読者であれば、おそらくその問題を解決し筋書きを完全なものとし得ただろう。

・to bring to a fuller or finished state; to produce or expressin a complete form or in detail; to develop, elaborate.

The theory [of the survival of the fittest]..was worked out  with the most  minute and elaborate care.

自動詞用法

・to make its way out, esp. from being imbedded or inclosed  in something; to  become gradually loose and come out:

　内部に閉ざされていたものが徐々に緩んで顔を出す

・Fresh splinters of the bone  continually worked out.

　骨の新鮮な破片が次々と出現した。

・to proceed so as to issue in a particular result;　特別な結果に進む

It is..impossible to tell..how the situation in Ireland will work  out.

　アイルランドの立場がどんな結果に進むのか・・・分からない。

・to amount to (so much) when reckoned up, to ‘come to’.

　計算すると〜に達する

This [quantity of tea] when infused works out at about 4,000,000 gallons.

　お湯を注げばこのお茶の量は凡そ４００万ガロンにも達すると算定される。

＊work out の out には、遣りきる、外に出るの２つの意味を当てはめて考え、訳語を当てて下さい。
