= although, even though

= in spite of

The game continued despite the rain.

　雨にも拘わらす（＝雨の妨げにも拘わらず） 試合は続いた。

Despite her illness, she came to work.

　病気にも拘わらず彼女は働きに来た。

Despite all of this ethnolinguistic variety, the legal  process  of obtaining a  protective order operates, for the most part, quite systematically.

He managed to eat a big lunch despite having eaten  an  enormous  breakfast.

= to bring about or succeed in accomplishing,  sometimes  despite difficulty or  hardship

= to exert oneself vigorously; try hard

Despite repeated assurances that the product is  safe,  many  people have  stopped buying it.

　その製品が安全だと何度も言明されたにも拘わらず、人々の多くは買うのを止めている。

John’s company is doing extremely well despite the  recession.

　景気後退にも拘わらずジョンの会社は絶好調だ。

despite oneself

　不本意ながら （＝本当は遣りたくないこと、遣るべきでは無いにも拘わらず）

She took the money from her mother's purse, despite  herself.

　遣りたくは無かったが、彼女は母の財布から金を取った。

＊in spite of と despite はほぼ同じ意味であり、２つの物事の間の対照性を表現します。共に口語よりは文語で使われるのが普通です。despite の方が inspite of よりも幾らか formal です。共に後ろに動名詞を伴う使い方も出来ます。

後ろにthat 節を従えることは出来ず、文章を繋ぐ場合は、in  spite  of the fact  that

或いは despite the fact that　とします。

He got the job in spite of his  prison record.

　服役記録（前科）にも拘わらず彼は職を得た。

= He got the job despite his  prison record.

He runs very fast in spite of  being terribly overweight.

　ぶったまげるほどのデブだが彼は走るのがとても速い。

They arrived late despite  leaving in plenty of time.

　時間に余裕を持って出発したにも拘わらず彼らの到着は遅かった。

When they arrived at Malaga it was hot, in spite of  (= despite)  the fact that it  was only the end of  April.

I tried to reason with him, but even as I started to  explain  what had  happened   he stood up to  leave.

・used to say that if something is the case or not, the  result  is the same:

even now/then

・despite something:　〜にも拘わらず

I've thought about it so much, but even now I can't  believe  how lucky I was  to   survive the  accident.

　それについてこれまで深く考えて来てるのだが、それにも拘わらず（今でも）その事故に生き延びるとは自分は何と幸運だったのだろうと信じられないぐらいだ。

→I've thought about it so much, but even now I can't  believe  the luckiness  of   my survival in   the accident. 事故に生き残った自分の幸運が信じられない。

I gave Jim very clear instructions, but even then he  managed  to make a  mess   of it.

　オレはジムに事細かに指示して遣ったが、それにも拘わらず、奴は愚かにもそれを無茶苦茶にして呉れやがった。

cf. manage to do なんとかやり遂げる　（反語）愚かにも〜して呉れやがる

cf. make a mess of 〜を汚す、台無しにする

even so

・despite what has just been said　直前に述べたことにも拘わらず　　そうは言ったが

I had a terrible headache, but even so I went to the  concert.

　烈しい頭痛だったが、そうは言うもののコンサートに行った。

An immediate interest cut might give a small boost  to  the  economy. Even so,   any recovery is  likely to be very slow.

even though

= although:

Even though he left school at 16, he still managed to  become  prime minister.

　学校は１６歳で辞めでしまったが、それにも拘わらず彼は何とか首相になった。

＊even though は although とよく似ていますが、対照性をより強く述べます。

＊〜の事実であったにも関わらず（予想や期待に反して）〜だった、の様に時間の順序､配列  (chronology)  が意味に内包されますので、although の様に（例外はありますが）主節と従節間で入れ替える事は出来ません。
