２０１６年英国のファンタジードラマ Ren のシリーズ１、第１話です。Ren がテントの中で

絵を描きながらぼそぼそ喋るシーンは聴き取りにくいですが皆さんは如何でしょうか？

　存在或いは発達し続けている、現時点に於いて起きている、

　進行中の、継続中の

= to happen or take place: What's going on here? 一体何なの？

= to continue: Go on working.　手を休めるな！

= to behave; act: Don't go on like that!　そんな振る舞いは止めろ！

No agreement has yet been reached and the negotiations are still ongoing.

It was just another episode in an ongoing saga of marriage problems.

　それは結婚生活のトラブルを巡る現在進行中の武勇伝の中の、まさにもう一つのエピソードだった。

　大きな流れの中の１部分を構成する偶発事、出来ごと、

　小説・劇などの中の挿話(そうわ)、連続物の放送番組一回分

"South Africa may remain one of history's most tragic episodes" (Bayard Rustin).

　南アフリカ（なる国の存在、建国）は歴史上の最も悲劇的な出来事の１つで有り続けるかもしれない。

　　（episode：　歴史なる連続物の中に起きた１つの出来事）

＊South Africa = an episode であると主張する文章ですが、国の名は出来事ではなく非論理です。出来事 episode を当てるなら、南アフリカなる国が存在したこと、或いは建国したとの＜出来事＞の意味に取るしかありません。詰まりは適当な言葉を補って理解する必要がありますが、英語にはこの手の言葉を端折った類いの文章（作家が書こうが悪文）が結構出て来て日本人の初学者を惑わせると思います。Listen to me. 私＜の話す事＞を聴きなさい、と同様です。補語、目的語などの意味に合わせて適宜日本語を補って理解する必要があります。この辺のところがフランス語などと違って、英語の意味の曖昧さを許容する＜その場で内輪で通じればまぁ良い＞性を良く例示していると感じます。

The second element is a compound of eis "into" + hodos "a way, path; a journey; a method, system," a word of uncertain origin (see Exodus). Transferred sense of "outstanding incident, experience" first recorded in English 1773. Transferred by 1930s to individual broadcasts of serial radio programs.
