「終わる」 「終える」の関連表現　主な動詞とその派生語

＊多義を持つ動詞に関しては、その「終える」 「終わる」 の意味用法部分のみを示しています。他の意味用法が存在することにご注意下さい。

＊　phrasal verb 句動詞  （易しい動詞＋副詞などの組み合わせで、特別な意味を持つ） 及び　informal な idiom は 口語としての利用はＯＫですが、formal な文章や speach では利用は差し控えて下さい。これらは後に別個に纏めてあります。

＊それ以外の単語−ラテン語起源のものが多い−の意味用法を確実に頭に input して下さい。まぁ、硬派な英動詞になります。

abandon

・to stop doing an activity before you have finished it:

　やり終える前に活動を停止する、中止する、取りやめる、見捨てる、捨て去る

The game was abandoned at half-time because of the poorweather conditions.

　気象条件が悪かったのでその試合はハーフタイムで中止された。

They had to abandon their attempt to climb the mountain.

　彼らはその山に登ろうとの試みを中止せねばならなかった。

The party has now abandoned its policy of unilateraldisarmament.

その政党は一方的武装解除の方針を今は取りやめている。

・to stop an activity before it is finished, usually becauseyou think you cannot succeed:

　成功出来ないと考え活動を途中で止める

abandon a project/plan/an idea

　事業／計画／アイデアを中止する、捨て去る

The car maker has abandoned its plans to build a giant newplant.

　その自動車メーカーは巨大な新プラントを築こうとの計画を中止した。

abandon a lawsuit/case/claim

　訴訟／事件／申し立てから手を退く、中止する

The high cost of legal representation can  influence  a  person's  decision  about  whether  to abandon a claim.

　法的代理人（＝弁護士）の高コストは、申し立てを中止すべきかどうかについての人々の決定に影響する可能性がある。

＊can influence a person's decision about whether to do

→ can help a person to decide wether to do

→ can help a person to decide to abandon a claim.

＜人が〜しようかどうかを決定するのに影響する＞、これはしばしば見られる英語特有のもって回った典型的表現で、感心出来ません。influence, decide,abandon と動詞が３つ並び頭の中が上下左右に翻弄されて意味が入って来ないのです。

最初の＜influence 影響する＞なる動詞は排除して文意を明確に把握すると

→ Because of the high cost of legal  representation,  a  person  can  decide to abandon a claim.

= It's possible that a person decides  to  abandon  a  claim  because  the  cost  of legal representation is expensive

弁護士費用が高額なので、人は法的申し立てを中止しようとする場合もありえる。

法的代理人（＝弁護士）の高コストは、申し立てを中止すべきかどうかについての人々の決定に影響する可能性がある。

→法的代理人（＝弁護士）の高コストは、申し立てを中止した方が良いと人々を決定させる場合がある。

→弁護士費用が高額なので、人は法的申し立てを中止しようとする場合もありえる。

　と、スッキリした日本語にまず脳内整理するのも良いと思います。

＊単純な表現で言いたいことが言えました！

＊influence 影響する、などの曖昧性を含む表現を切り捨てて、具体的且つ明確な意味内容に把握し直します。

abolish

・to put an end to something, such as an organization, rule,or custom officially:

to end an activity, custom, etc. completely or by law orofficial action:

　活動や習慣、規則、組織を法律や公的活動により終える、廃止する、法的に取りやめる

I think bullfighting should be abolished.

　僕は闘牛は法的に止めさせるべきと思うよ。

National Service was abolished in the UK in 1962.

　国民兵役（＝徴兵制度）は英国では１９６２年に廃止されました。

The government ought to abolish the tax altogether.

　政府は全租税を廃止せねばならない。

The government is planning to abolish subsidies to farmers.

　政府は農家への助成金を廃止する計画である。

Is monarchy relevant in the modern world or should it beabolished?

　近代世界に関与する独裁政治は近代世界に於いて適切なものなのか或いは廃止すべきなのか？

to ask someone in a formal way to do something: 何かをする様に公的に要請する

＊句動詞ですが例外的に formal に利用出来ます。

I now call on everyone to raise a glass to the happy couple.

　さて、新婚のお２人にグラスを掲げる様に皆さんにお願い致します。

The government has pledged to abolish child poverty by2020.

　政府は２０２０年までに子供の貧困を公的に無くすと誓っている。

to cause something to stop or fail before it begins or beforeit is complete:

(故障などで)何かがそれが開始される前に、或いは完結する前に中止させる、失敗する、堕胎する、挫折する

The mission had to be aborted at the last minute.

　その指令は最後の瞬間に中止されねばならなかった。

If something goes wrong during the launch sequence thesystem will automatically abort.

　もし打ち上げ段階で何か支障が生じればそのシステムは自動的に停止する。

The pilot missed the approach and aborted the landing.

　パイロットは機会を逃し着陸を取りやめた。

accomplish

to finish something successfully or to achieve something:

　（長い間の多くの労働、努力の後に）成功裡に何かを終わらせる、何かを成し遂げる、やり遂げる

＊簡単なことに対して accomplish の言葉は利用出来ません。

The students accomplished the task in less than tenminutes.

　その学生は課題を１０分以下で終わらせた。

She accomplished such a lot during her visit.

　彼女は訪問中にとても多くをやり遂げて呉れた。

I feel as if I've accomplished nothing since I left my job.

　職を離れてからは何も達成していない様な気がするんだ。

These goals will be extremely hard to accomplish.

　これらの目標は成し遂げるのはとても難しいだろう。

accomplishment

the finishing of something:

something that is successful, or that is achieved after a lotof work or effort:

　（長い間の多くの労働、努力の後に）何かを成し遂げること、完成、成就、遂行、成果、業績、特技、(上流社会の)教養

We celebrated the successful accomplishment of our task.

　課題が首尾良く成就出来たことを我々は祝福した。

Getting the two leaders to sign a peace treaty was hisgreatest accomplishment.

　２人の指導者に平和条約にサインさせた事は彼の最大の功績だった。

accomplish の同義語 Synonyms

＊同義語として以下の様な動詞が有ります：

achieve　成し遂げる、功績を立てる

＊accomplish とほぼ同じ意味を持ちますが、achieve の方はよりプライドや名誉の考えを持ちます。（問題を乗り越えて）何かを成し遂げた事に要した、努力、自己制御と言った深いレベルでの＜成し遂げ＞です。academic performance や人生上のことで何かを成し遂げた、成功した、の場合に利用されます。

attain formal　(努力して)成し遂げる、到達する

fulfil  (MAKE HAPPEN) mainly UK　果たす、実現する

reach　到達する

realize  (ACHIEVE)　実現する、実行する

After years of rejection, she finallyachievedsuccess on thebig screen.

　何度もオーディションに落ちた後に、彼女は遂に映画で成功を収めた。

Ifulfilledmy dreams of  becoming  a  marine  biologist.

　海洋生物学者になるとの自分の夢を私は実現させました。（英国用法）

There was nothing to prevent  her  from  realising her  ambitions.

　何事も彼女の野心を実現せんとの思いを妨げることは出来なかった。
