＊品詞としては全て副詞になります。

not 　only … but　 (also)

not 　just, 　not　 solely, 　not 　simply 　+ 　but 　(also)

　〜のみならず〜もまた

＊not only A but also B で、ＡとＢは対等な文法的構成要素（例：句vs.句、動詞以下の文vs.動詞以下の文、など）にします。

＊話し言葉で用いると堅苦しいのであまり用いられず、formal なスピーチや文章で使われることが大半です。

＊correlative  conjunction  相関接続詞などと言う勿体を付けたものに分類されますが、both  A  and  B  などもその仲間です。

＊極めて頻用される表現 ですが、native は、この様な思考様式が余程好きなのかと思わされる程です。

＊not  A  but  B  は、Ａではなく Ｂ だ、即ち、 B  rather  than  A であり、Ａ は完全に否定されます。

＊他方、 not  only  A の方は、Ａ のみならず、と、Ａ がまず肯定されている点で意味の大きな違いが生じます。

＊ not　 の後ろに、only,  just, 　solely, 　simply 　などの事象、事物を制限する語が付いていないか常にご注意下さい！

＊only  not  は否定 not の強調表現となり、全然違う  never  の意味になりますのでご注意を！

1. 仮定法表現

If only she had listened to me, she wouldn’t be  in  this  mess.

　もし彼女が私の言うことさえ聞いていれば、こんなことにはならなかっただろうに。

If only she'd listen to what he's saying, I'm sure  they  could  solve the problem.

　もし彼女が彼の言うことを聞きさえすれば、きっと問題を解決できるだろうに。

仮定法の副節の独立的利用

 If only は I wish 「〜だったらいいのに」 という意味でも使われます：

If only I had more money.

　お金がもっとあればなぁ。

= I wish I had more money.

2. 仮定法表現では無く、単純な条件節中に only  を利用しただけと解釈出来る表現も成立します：

I think you should get a job, if only to have  something  to  do.

　もし本当に遣りたいことがあるのなら、仕事を見つけるべきだと思う。（強意の only）

= I think you should get a job, if you really  want  to  have  something to do.

I only hope/wish (that)

used to emphasize what you are hoping or  wishing  for:

　願っていることを強調するときに使う： 願うばかりです

＊hope　の後ろは現在形や未来形を使いますが、 wish  の後ろは必ず仮定法表現にします（時制が１つ過去に戻る）。

I only hope you know what you're doing.

　あなたが何をしているか知っていることを願うばかりです。

I only wish that they would keep in touch  more  regularly.

　彼らがもっと定期的に連絡を取り合ってくれることを願うばかりだ。
